Nosy Crow is launching a classics list, starting with a new edition of The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams.
The book, first published in 1922, is about a velveteen rabbit who is snubbed by the other, more modern, toys in a nursery. However, he becomes his boy’s favourite toy for while, until the boy contracts scarlet fever and is ordered to go to the coast.
Nosy Crow is publishing the book with new artwork by Sarah Massini on 1st September 2016. The book will be printed on Munken paper, with a fully-foiled cloth binding and cloth cover, and will have an r.r.p. of £14.99.
M.d. Kate Wilson said the company plans to release at least one classic book next year, starting with a retelling of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan by Caryl Hart and illustrated by Sarah Warburton, then “more will follow”.
“We were inspired to do this because we loved the classics in question but we sometimes struggled, as parents, to find really lovely, fresh but collectible editions to give as gifts, and, in the case of some of the classics we are considering, to find truly accessible versions of the stories,” she said.
Nosy Crow are also producing 1,000 signed, limited edition copies of The Velveteen Rabbit for independent bookshops, which are packaged in a belly band rather than a jacket.
