A Nook promotion of "Hot Summer Books" is selling e-books of frontlist titles from major publishers for 99p.
Novels including Khaled Hosseini's And The Mountains Echoed (Bloomsbury), a hardback with an £18.99 RRP currently at number five in the original fiction bestseller chart, are on offer on the UK Nook website at the knockdown price, with Amazon.co.uk price-matching to offer its e-book for the title at 99p also. And The Mountains Echoed has now risen to number two in the Kindle bestseller chart.
The list of discounted titles also includes One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern (HarperCollins), Lottie Moggach's Kiss Me First (Picador) and Richard Madeley's Some Day I'll Find You (Simon & Schuster), all released on 4th July, plus Revenge Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger (HarperCollins), released on 20th June, and Lauren Beukes' The Shining Girls (HarperCollins), released in April. Game of Thrones by George R R Martin (HarperCollins) is also included in the Nook and Amazon 99p offer.
Other titles offered by Nook but not currently matched on Amazon include include TransAtlantic by Colum McCann (Bloomsbury) and Dead Man's Time by Peter James (Pan Mac), along with Hilary Mantel's Man Booker Prize-winning Bring Up the Bodies (HarperCollins).
In 2012, Sony's Reader Store ran a promotion selling many top titles, including Yann Martel's Life of Pi (Canongate) for 20p. The pricing was also matched by Amazon, leading many to express concerns about the devaluing of the e-book market.
