Niffenegger to curate ghost story collection

Audrey Niffenegger is to curate and illustrate a collection of ghost stories for Vintage Classics.

The “eclectic” collection, called Ghostly, will include “unusual, forgotten and previously unpublished stories, and of course, the odd cat”, said the publisher.

As well as stories by authors including Edith Wharton, Rudyard Kipling, Neil Gaiman and Kelly Link, Niffenegger will write a story for the collection.

Niffenegger will also illustrate the book, introduce each story, and write an introduction to the volume.

The author of books including The Time Traveler’s Wife (Vintage), said: “I've been reading ghost stories since I was tiny, they were some of the first stories I loved. The stories collected in Ghostly are the unusual ones, not the most popular but the ones that have haunted me over my years of reading.”

Suzanne Dean, creative director at Vintage Publishing, said:  “I am looking forward to collaborating with Audrey. I love her illustrations and I am sure we are going to have great fun creating the perfect Ghostly package.”

Niffenegger and Dean will be interviewed about the project as part of a wider feature on book design, on 26th December on Radio 4’s Front Row.

The collaboration is part of a Vintage Classics publishing agenda to form relationships with “exciting partners and writers to create beautifully designed classics”. Previous collaborations include Leanne Shapton’s Jane Austen series, Tiffany & Co.’s The Great Gatsby and the artist Mark Herald’s centenary edition of Cider With Rosie.

Earlier this year Niffenegger revealed she was writing two books, one a sequel to The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Ghostly will be published in hardback on 24th September 2015, costing £14.99.
