The debut novel by “Newsnight” economics editor Paul Mason has been acquired by No Exit Press, with a digital-first publication lined up for this year.
Publishing director Ion Mills bought UK rights (including digital) in Rare Earth for an undisclosed sum from John Oakes of OR Books in New York.
No Exit will publish as an e-book original on 20th March 2012, with a trade paperback to follow on 30th April and a b-format paperback on 2nd October.
Rare Earth tells the story of a washed-up TV reporter who stumbles on to a corruption scandal in Western China. He uncovers the “real China” along the way, including illegal metal mines, a gang of girl bikers and a commune of Tiananmen Square survivors.
Mills said: "We are thrilled to be publishing Paul’s debut novel. His reputation as a frontline economics journalist and broadcaster is unsurpassed and Rare Earth is dazzling entertainment from start to finish."
Mason joined the BBC2 current affairs show in 2001 and has penned three non-fiction titles including Meltdown: The End of the Age of Greed and Why It’s Kicking off Everywhere: The New Global Revolutions.
