Audiobooks will now be a separate category at the Audio & Radio Industry Awards (Arias).
Audiobooks were previously accepted as part of the Best Fictional Storytelling category, but organisers have separated Audiobooks out from Audio Drama this year, acknowledging the “uniqueness” of the two genres.
The category rubric explains judges are looking for “the perfect combination of stunning reading, an expertly edited script and flawless production that draws listeners into the story being told”.
The Gold award in the new category will go to “the best audiobook or reading that best transposes the written word into an audio experience” and is open to “performances from primarily one narrator (without a cast of actors) and with limited additional audio production (e.g., soundscaping, music etc)”.
Entries cost £50 per entry, and entrants must be members of the Radio Academy, the audio and radio industry’s charity. The ARIAS – considered the Oscars of radio and audio – are presented at a star-studded ceremony in May, and entries are open now until 7th February.
