New Titan Sherlock book to focus on Mycroft Holmes

Titan Books has acquired World English rights to publish an Sherlock Holmes-inspired novel written collaboratively by NBA all-star and author, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and screenwriter and producer Anna Waterhouse.

The novel, titled Mycroft Holmes, focuses on Sherlock’s older brother, who is working for the British government straight out of university when he gets drawn into a life-or-death adventure in the Caribbean. It will feature Sherlock as a student at King’s College, as well as hints about the ‘true state’ of the Holmes family and the painful legacy that the brothers endure.

Editor Steve Saffel said: “Kareem’s insights into Mycroft’s character, his focus on the historical aspects of the novel, and his passion for writing impressed me from the start. It will be a unique addition to the Holmes universe, surprising and engaging the readers.”

Abdul-Jabbar discovered his love for Conan Doyle's Sherlock when a fledgling NBA player, and became intrigued by Sherlock’s older brother after reading Michael P Hodel’s Enter the Lion: A Posthumous Memoir of Mycroft Holmes (Hawthorn). He said: "I realised more could be done with this 'older, smarter' character and his window onto the highest levels of British government—at a time when Britain was the most powerful country in the world."

Abdul-Jabbar is the author of ten previous non-fiction books for both adults and children, and he has acted in several films, as well as writing for Time magazine. Mycroft Holmes is his first novel. His co-writer Waterhouse is a professional screenwriter and script consultant. Alongside Abdul-Jabbar, she was supervising producer and co-writer of the feature-length documentary "On the Shoulders of Giants".

Titan Books will publish Mycroft Holmes in October 2015.
