Barrington Stoke is the latest publisher to enter the early reader market.
Its new series, called Little Gems, will be aimed at younger readers aged five to eight years with a reading age of six years plus.
The books will be illustrated on every page, and they will be in a smaller, chunkier format than its core fiction. Little Gems will launch with two titles by Julia Donaldson in August 2012, with further titles by Ross Collins and Geraldine McCaughrean in 2013.
Publisher Orchard will also launch a series of early readers based on its Rainbow Magic books, with Flora the Fancy Dress Fairy publishing on 3rd May. Each book will re-tell a familiar story from the Rainbow Magic world in abridged form, with age-appropriate language endorsed by Prue Goodwin of the University of Reading.
Orion Children’s Books early readers, which repurpose existing books to include illustrations, have sold 1.4 million copies to date, and the publisher will have 57 books in print by the end of 2012.
