New memoir to mark Athill's 99th birthday

Granta Books has acquired a further volume of memoir by former Costa Biography Award winning-author Diana Athill.

Editorial director Bella Lacey acquired world rights to the book, titled Alive, Alive Oh! And Other Things That Matter, from Rebecca Carter at Janklow and Nesbit.

Athill was a founding director of Andre Deutsch publishing house, as well as being a novelist and memoirist. Her books include Yesterday Morning, Stet and Somewhere Towards the End, which won the Costa Biography Award in 2008 (all published by Granta Books).

In Alive, Alive Oh! Athill, who is in her late nineties, asks “what really matters?” and reflects on memories from her life which have risen to the surface as she approaches 100.

Lacey said: “It has been pure pleasure to be reading Diana Athill again. From the descriptions of her retirement home, to the changing priorities of old age, to her vivid recollections of middle-age and childhood, of fashions and of war, across the span of the last century, Athill is clear-sighted, wise and true - and always entertaining. She brilliantly and poignantly reminds us what really matters, and of the joy to be found in life.”

Publication of Alive, Alive Oh! is planned for Athill’s 99th birthday in autumn 2016.

Nielsen BookScan has recorded sales of 122,960 books for Athill.
