Little, Brown has revealed a new look for Iain Banks for his forthcoming novel Transition, which will be simultaneously released as a free abridged podcast which will be serialised from publication day, 3rd September.
The new jacket has an embossed design which is intended to reflect the "cross-over" content of the title, which will appeal to both Banks' sci-fi and literary fiction fans. According to the publisher, the new look is "trying something new and ground-breaking", to commemorate 25 years since his début, The Wasp Factory.
The first instalment of the podcast will be broadcast on 3rd September, with 23 further 15-minute episodes released on iTunes in the UK and US every Thursday and Saturday for 12 weeks. The serialisation will be promoted in both the UK and the US, where the title is to be published by Orbit, as well as on the Iain Banks website, which will be relaunched in September with a focus on building a community for fans. Campaigns are also planned around the paperback publication next spring.
On the publication date, LB will publish the novel as an £18.99 hardback, CD r.r.p. £15.65, e-book r.r.p. £17.61 and unabridged digital download r.r.p. £19.56. Each podcast will include tagging for the alternate versions.
Sarah Shrubb, editorial director of Hachette Digital, said: "This is the first time an audio has been serialised in this way, and we're very excited to be doing something so groundbreaking."
