Serpent's Tail has signed a new novel from Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book Club.
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves is described as a novel about an unusual American family with secrets it cannot share. It focuses on Rosemary, a student in California, and her unique sister, Fern.
Rebecca Gray, commissioning editor at Serpent's Tail, signed UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Anthony Goff at David Higham on behalf of Molly Friedrich at the Friedrich Agency.
Gray said: "From the beginning, or the middle, since that’s where it starts, I loved the voice Karen Joy Fowler has created. So getting to the big reveal, round about page 77, was an unlooked-for extra that meant I had to publish this book.
"I’ve been ecstatic as proofs have travelled round the company and my colleagues have become evangelists too. Look out for us—we will be pressing this book into your hands between now and March."
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves has been recently published in the US, with praise from the likes of Barbara Kingsolver, Alice Sebold, Michael Chabon and Ruth Ozeki, who said: "It's been years since I've felt so passionate about a book."
The novel will be published in the UK in March 2014.
