New Judith Kerr picture book to HCCB

HarperCollins Children’s Books has acquired a new picture book from Judith Kerr, the author of the 1968 classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea (also published by HCCB).

The new book, titled The Crocodile Under the Bed, tells the tale of a boy who finds a crocodile under his bed when he is too ill to go to a party. HarperCollins will showcase the book at the Bologna Book Fair later this month before publishing it in hardback in October.

World rights, including film, TV and merchandising, were acquired by publishing and creative director Rachel Denwood, who said there was "great excitement" at HarperCollins at the prospect of the new publication.“It will be one of the publishing events of the year," she said. "Judith’s books have delighted millions of readers the world over and I have no doubt that the splendid The Crocodile Under the Bed will be a firm favourite for years to come.”

Kerr is one of the UK’s most celebrated children’s authors. Born in Berlin, she left Germany with her family in 1933 escape the rise of the Nazi party. The Tiger Who Came to Tea has sold 1,013,380 copies in all formats since Nielsen BookScan records began, generating sales of £5,361,411, and other popular Kerr titles include Mog the Forgetful Cat and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (both HCCB).

In 2012 she was awarded an OBE for her services to children’s literature and holocaust education.
