HarperCollins Children’s is publishing two Geek Girl specials as sales of the teen series top half a million.
The first book in the series by Holly Smale came out two years ago and sales in the UK have already topped half a million, according to HarperCollins (print sales have reached 441,098 copies on Nielsen BookScan).
The publisher will this November release All Wrapped Up, about the eponymous character’s first date fiasco, followed by a summer special in July 2016 (title to be confirmed), which is set during fashion week. Both specials will be published in hardback, priced at £9.99.
Ruth Alltimes, publishing director of fiction at HarperCollins, struck a deal for world rights with Kate Shaw at The Viney Agency.
Alltimes said: “Teens the world over have fallen for Geek Girl in a big way – Holly’s unique writing has captivated readers with its irrepressible humour, heartfelt warmth and loveable characters. It takes a rare talent for comedy to translate well in so many different countries but the Geek Girl appeal is universal.”
