Hodder & Stoughton has acquired a new memoir from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who announced his retirement two weeks ago after 27 years leading the club.
The volume, to be called The Autobiography, will be published in October 2013, with editor Roddy Bloomfield holding worldwide rights. Bloomfield has worked with Ferguson on previous books, including a previous memoir, Managing My Life, which was published in 1999.
The new book will tell Ferguson's full story, from his very early days growing up in the shipyard areas of Govan, to his final game—his 1,500th—in charge of Manchester United, away to West Bromwich Albion.
The publisher said Ferguson has been "reflecting on and jotting down" his thoughts about his career over the past four years, and that the book will also address his leadership qualities, his sense of mischief and humour, and his relationship with his family.
The announcement follows news that Simon & Schuster will release a new Manchester United title, about the 2012/13 season, next month, as well as an updated official club biography of Ferguson, including news of his retirement, which it is planning to release ahead of the start of this autumn's football season.
As the official publisher of Manchester United, S&S is also releasing a title in October called The Impossible Treble, looking at the season of 1998/99 when the manager led the team to victory in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
