The New Dutch Writing campaign is welcoming Dutch writers to the UK once again this autumn including events across Sheffield, at the Cheltenham Literary Festival and in Brixton.
Showcasing the scene, it features two key festival partnerships and various events with a bill of 17 Dutch and Belgian authors, translators and illustrators.
Off the Shelf Festival of Words in Sheffield, which runs from 15th to 31st October, will include a specially commissioned piece called "Biography of a Fly". It sees 30 chapters written by Jaap Robben and translated by David Doherty, with drawings by Paul Faassen, emblazoned on posters across 17 locations around the city. Robben will be appearing on 16th October to discuss his 2021 International Booker-longlisted novel Summer Brother (World Editions), translated by Doherty.
Robben is also appearing at Cheltenham Literature Festival on 14th October, talking to Jodie Chapman about the powerful brotherly bonds at the heart of their books, in an event chaired by Cathy Rentzenbrink. He will also speak in the New Dutch Writing debates and give readings at the Huddle Stage—part of Cheltenham's Read the World programme. Taking place on 14th October, it features "cutting-edge new voices in poetry and fiction alongside the brightest names in translation", with Robben joining fellow author Karin Amatmoekrim and translator Michele Hutchison in a session chaired by Rosie Goldsmith of the European Literature Network to discuss the contemporary Dutch writing scene.
Other events at Cheltenham include a session on the diversity of translation, with Michele Hutchison chairing the discussion, alongside translator Jozef van der Voort, poet Radna Fabias, author Louise Glück and poet and translator Paul Evans.
In Brixton, author and art historian Willem-Jan Verlinden will explore Vincent van Gogh’s formative years on 9th October with Van Gogh House and the Type Archive, reflecting on his book The van Gogh Sisters (Thames & Hudson), translated by Yvette Rosenberg and Brendan Monaghan.
New Dutch Writing is a campaign from the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Modern Culture to promote writing in translation in the UK. It launched in summer 2019 with various events. For more information, visit newdutchwriting.co.uk.
