Guardian Faber has signed British neuroscientist Dr Adrian Owen's Into the Gray Zone: A Neuroscientist Explores the Border Between Life and Death.
Laura Hassan, editorial director at Guardian Faber, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights at auction from Kate McLennan at Abner Stein on behalf of Gail Ross and Anna Sproul Latimer at Ross Yoon.
In the book, Owen will take readers to the edge of a "dazzling, humbling frontier" in our understanding of the brain: the so-called “gray zone” - the borderland between life and death.
"Owen's astonishing patient stories and dramatic scientific discoveries change everything we thought we knew about consciousness," the publisher has said.
Hassan said: "You couldn’t hope for a better guide into this unchartered territory. Dr Owen moves gracefully between patient’s stories, scientific hypothesis and breakthroughs to the pressing ethical questions his work raises. This is exactly what I wanted to read having recently devoured Do No Harm and Being Mortal."
Owen is the Canada excellence research chair in cognitive neuroscience and imaging at The Brain and Mind Institute, Western University, Canada. His work has been published in journals such as Nature, The Lancet, Science, and The New England Journal of Medicine.
Guardian Faber will publish Into the Gray Zone in Spring 2017.
