Readers of Richard and Judy’s Book Club have voted Natural Causes by James Oswald as their favourite summer title.
The crime novel was originally published as an e-book with over 350,000 downloads before it was snapped up for a publishing deal by Penguin. The Sea Sisters by Lucy Clarke (Harper) came second in the reader vote and The Sea Change by Joanna Rossiter (Penguin) ranked third. Customers could vote online for their favourite Book Club title.
Judy Finnigan said: “I absolutely loved this book. Natural Causes is a superbly written murder mystery, a deeply satisfying and totally engrossing crime story and Edinburgh makes a wonderful setting for a murder mystery.
"Inspector McLean is a compelling and satisfying cop in the classic mould—morose, sometimes grumpy, with a troubled home life. But he is totally sympathetic. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading this marvellous book and how thrilled we are that it has won the reader vote."
James Oswald said he was “amazed and astonished” to win the reader vote. “All the other Summer Reads were brilliant books, and it was a huge honour to be picked alongside them,” he said.
