Murday made head of comms in Penguin Life restructure

Penguin Life has announced a restructure with Julia Murday made head of communications with commissioning.

Previously senior campaigns manager, Murday will now head up the imprint on day-to-day matters along with editorial director Emily Robertson. Venetia Butterfield, publisher for Penguin General  - which encompasses Penguin Business, Penguin Life and Viking - will oversee the overall strategy for the imprint as well as commissioning. Murday will now report to Butterfield and Anna Ridley, communications director at Penguin General.

Marianne Tatepo who recently joined as assistant editor from HarperCollins will report to Robertson, who has been editorial director since 2017.

Butterfield, who set up Penguin Life in 2016, sent an announcement to staff with the news, writing: “Penguin Life in 2018 had another hugely successful year beating our net sales budget by £1m. Emily Robertson and Julia Murday are heading up the imprint with Emily responsible for editorial and Julia for communications but continuing to work in a very enmeshed way.

“I’m delighted to announce the promotion of Julia Murday to head of communications with commissioning for Penguin Life.  This is to reflect and acknowledge Julia’s on-going fantastic work leading the communications strategy for Penguin Life, managing the comms team and delivering outstanding campaigns for authors such as Rangan Chatterjee, Meik Wiking and many others.

"Julia will also be acquiring two projects a year and has recently acquired Lift Yourself by Laura Hoggins, and is actively looking for more projects going forward."

The team has also been bolstered with an additional editor. “Marianne Tatepo joined the team in January 2019 as assistant editor for Penguin Life. She is reporting to Emily Robertson and will be working across the Penguin Life list on authors such as Karen Haller, Michael Acton Smith and Andrew Jenkinson. She joins us from 4th Estate and William Collins where she worked with authors such as Max Hastings, David Attenborough and Kathryn Mannix.

"Josie Murdoch, campaigns manager, will continue to report into Julia and Alice Gordge, who joined the team towards the end of last year as publishing assistant, will continue to report into Emily and Julia.”
