Mulholland Books has acquired Lexicon by Max Barry, described as a "dazzling and original thriller", to be published in 2013.
Editor Ruth Tross bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Cullen Stanley at Janklow and Nesbit. It will be published in summer 2013, with film rights optioned by Matthew Vaughn, writer/director of "Kick-Ass" and "X-Men: First Class".
Lexicon revolves around a secret organisation known as the Poets, whose members use words as weapons to control people's thoughts and actions. Wil, who is an apparently ordinary man, finds himself pursued when he discovers he holds the key to the mystery of Broken Hill, where a single word killed thousands.
Tross said: "Max Barry is one of the most visionary writers around, and Lexicon is a completely dazzling and original thriller full of unpredictable twists and unforgettable characters."
