Picador associate publisher Ravi Mirchandani snapped up the latest novel from bestselling Dutch author Herman Koch, his first acquisition since moving to the publisher in September.
Mirchandani bought UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada, Australia and New Zealand) for Geachte Heer M (Dear Mr M). He negotiated the deal with Shared Stories Author Agency Amsterdam on behalf of publisher Ambo|Anthos uitgevers in conjunction with InkWell’s Michael V Carlisle.
Mirchandani said: “While Dear Mr M is as deliciously dark and acidly witty as Herman’s earlier books, there is also the added pleasure that it explores and satirises the writers’ world, from novelists’ use of reality in their fiction to the awkwardness of ill-attended author events.”
Koch is the author of Summerhouse with Swimming Pool (2012) and The Dinner (2014), which Mirchandani published while he was at Atlantic, where he worked until the beginning of 2014.
Picador will publish Dear Mr M in spring 2016. US and Canadian rights have gone to Hogarth/Crown, while Text will publish in Australia and New Zealand.
