Waterstones plans to move its York bookshop to new premises after 20 years in the same location.
The bookshop chain has applied to move from its current site in High Ousegate in the city to empty premises in Coney Street, formerly occupied by clothes store Republic which went into administration in February.
Waterstones has also applied to create a Café W on the first floor of the building.
The application plans described the move as "an opportunity to bring a prominent shopping unit, within York's central shopping area, back into use". It added: "Consequently, such a proposal will help to contribute to the economic vitality of Coney Street, as well as enhance the character of the conservation area."
