Morpurgo and Field to collaborate on Christmas title

Bestselling author Michael Morpurgo and illustrator Jim Field are working on a new Christmas picture book for Egmont.

Grandpa Christmas is about a grandfather and his desire for his granddaughter to live in a better world. Every Christmas Mia reads a letter from her grandfather which inspires her and the reader to look after the world we live in.

Melissa Fairley, publishing director for picture book and gift at Egmont, said: “Publishing super duo Michael Morpurgo and Jim Field have joined forces to give you the best Christmas present for 2018: a beautiful story about a grandfather’s wish for the world to be a better place for his granddaughter. It’s moving, heart-warming and will inspire people to protect our world for generations to come.”

Fairley acquired world rights in all languages for the text from Veronique Baxter at David Higham. Art director Rebecca Essilifie signed the illustration deal with Jodie Hodges at United Agents.

Morpurgo has written more than 40 children’s books and was awarded a knighthood for services to children’s literature and charity in 2018.

Field has worked with writers such as Kes Gray, Michelle Robinson, Rachel Bright and David Baddiel and was the sixth most successful illustrator in the UK last year, according to analysis from The Bookseller. Sales of his books totaled £2.9m in 2017.
