Mobile commerce site from Blackwell’s

Blackwell’s bookshops has launched an M-Commerce site, giving its student market the ability to download e-books onto their mobile phones.

The chain academic bookseller said it took the decision to launch the development after seeing a “considerable increase in traffic” to its website.

The company has recently stepped up its digital reading offering after announcing partnerships with Nook to sell its e-readers and with CourseSmart to offer students digital textbook rental. The company also has its branding on the HMV website as part of the company’s “Online Shopping Mall”’

Tom Cox, head of online for Blackwell’s bookshops and online, said: “We are seeing a considerable increase in traffic to from mobile devices, so the ability to deliver content in-line with customer expectation is vital. This latest development is further demonstration of our commitment to digital. We’re taking considerable steps to ensure we’re providing our customers with what they need, wherever they are, in the format they expect.”

Customers will have access to six million books through the M-commerce site, at the same time as being able to look up their reading lists while “on the move”.
