Penguin division Michael Joseph has signed the first official book of the Bafta-winning comedy series "Mrs Brown’s Boys".
Created by Irish comedian Brendan O’Carroll, who also plays Mrs Brown, the BBC1 series was the most watched TV programme on Christmas Day 2012, and the DVDs have sold more than 3m copies.
Editorial director Daniel Bunyard bought world rights to Mrs Brown’s Family Handbook, an illustrated hardback which will feature comic advice on running a household, directly from O’Carroll. Bunyard said: "It's a dream come true to work with Brendan O'Carroll. He is a creative genius, and it will be a privilege for us to offer a home to him as an author.
'Mrs. Brown's Boys' reaches an enormous audience of passionate and devoted fans—it will be an exciting challenge to develop books for them that carry the same fun and warmth as the show."
The Mrs Brown character first appeared in a stage show and a series of novels written by O'Carroll, which were published internationally by Penguin. O'Carroll said: "Following the success of the original Agnes Browne trilogy with Penguin in the US, Australia and around the world, it's only right that Mrs Brown remains with Penguin as her home."
Mrs Brown said: “I'm delighted to be doing this. I'm mad into books meself. In fact I've two at home that aren't even coloured in yet.”
The book will be published in autumn 2013.
