Misery memoir to Mainstream

<p>Mainstream m.d. Bill Campbell has scooped up a misery memoir said to be reminiscent of <em>Anglea&rsquo;s Ashes</em>. In <em>Ma! He Sold Me for a Few Cigarettes</em>, Martha Long recounts the harrowing childhood sexual abuse she suffered from her step-father and others in 1950s Dublin. As Long grows up, she learns to<br /> deal with the neglect and poverty with &ldquo;wit, a wicked sense of humour and her irrepressible spirit.&rdquo;</p><p>The deal, for world rights, was done directly with the author.
