Midlist authors plug big-brand gap in 2017 review

The Arts Council England report released at the tail end of 2017, citing the difficulties of making a living as a literary author, was stark reading. But whatever good intentions were behind it, there was some sense of plus ça change; if there is a consistent theme in the 160 years of The Bookseller archives, it is in the difficulties of authors scratching out a living.
