Michael O’Mara Books has launched a free colouring app in response “to the increased need for a weapon against stress and anxiety in our busy lives”.
The app contains a collection of adult colouring images, which can be coloured in using different methods.
Users can either tap an area of the screen to apply block colour or use the pen tool to create free-flowing lines and swirls.
There is also an opacity setting that allows users to create layered shading effects and images can be shared on social networks.
Eva Arnold, digital sales co-ordinator at Michael O’Mara Books, who developed the app, said: “I noticed an interest in digital colouring back in 2014, when people started searching for adult colouring books on our e-book store.
“Since then, there's been an explosion of activity on the app stores, but nothing that matched the detail or complexity of our adult colouring books. We thought we'd enter the market with something really detailed and unique that people could enjoy spending a lot of time on.
“The app comes with all the usual trimmings - you can create custom colour palettes, save the image to your device and share your work to social networks - but offers a lot more flexibility in how people colour.
“We hoped to create a digital product that would appeal to an entirely new audience, and also capture what’s special about our books.”
The app, which is currently compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, is available is in the iTunes app store. An Android version will be released in the future.
Michael O'Mara's colouring books include The Creative Colouring Book for Grown-ups and The Creative Therapy Colouring Book.
