Maxine Hitchcock, Michael Joseph publishing director, bought two novels at auction by Claire Douglas, whose début psychological thriller was published by HarperCollins this year.
Hitchcock completed the deal for UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) with Juliet Mushens at the United Talent Agency.
The first title, The Pier, will be published in summer 2016. It follows a woman who returns to her hometown when the body of her best friend, missing for 18 years, washes ashore.
Douglas’ The Sisters has sold almost 28,000 print copies in the UK since its release in August.
