McWilliam wins South Bank Sky Arts Awards

Candia McWilliam has won this year's South Bank Sky Arts Awards literature prize with her What to Look For in Winter: A Memoir in Blindness, published by Jonathan Cape.

The prizes were awarded at a ceremony hosted by veteran arts broadcaster Melvyn Bragg and screened on Sky Arts 1 last night [25th January].

McWilliams' memoir pipped Edmund de Waal's Costa Biograpy Award-winning The Hare with Amber Eyes (Chatto) and Barbara Trapido's Sex and Stravinsky (Bloomsbury) to the award.

The awards highlighted winners across 10 different art forms, with Gareth Edwards' debut feature film about alien invasion, "Monsters", winning in the film category, Channel 4's "This is England '86" scooping the television drama category and London's Royal Court triumphing in the theatre category for "Clybourne Park".
