McCall Smith pens children’s series

Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series (Abacus), has teamed up with illustrator Iain McIntosh to create a new children’s book series.

School Ship Tobermory is about Ben and Fee MacTavish, who are about to start school on the Tobermory ship, where young people train to be sailors. When a film crew arrives, Ben is chosen to be an extra, but he soon develops suspicions about what the director and his crew are really doing.

Scottish publisher Birlinn acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights from David Higham Associates and will publish the first book, also called School Ship Tobermory, under the BC Books imprint on 1st November (h/b, £9.99).

McCall Smith and McIntosh will mark publication by sailing to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull on the 15th October, where they will sign copies of the book at the Tackle and Books shop.

Birlinn said McCall Smith has not yet decided how many books there will be in the series, but confirmed he is already working on book two.
