Macmillan Children's Books (MCB) has acquired a YA comedy about a group of fangirls from debut US author Goldy Moldavsky.
Kill the Boy Band is a fictional account of what happens when a group of fangirls accidentally kidnap their least favourite member of their most favourite boy band, and is described as “'Heathers' if the girls were One Direction fans”.
MCB senior commissioning editor Rachel Petty acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights to the novel in a two-book deal at auction from Gemma Cooper at the Bent Agency, who was acting on behalf of Jenny Bent.
Petty said: “Kill the Boy Band captures the escalation of fandom into dangerous obsession with razor-sharp wit and an incredibly authentic voice. This book will speak to anyone who has ever loved (or loved to hate) a boy in a band.”
MCB will publish Kill The Boy Band in Spring 2016 and an untitled stand-alone following a year later.
The Bent Agency sold the US rights to Scholastic US in a six-publisher auction.
