Macmillan Children’s Books and Made in Me are simultaneously publishing a series of books based on legends, in both paperback and digital formats.
The Little Legend series consists of four books and is set in the fictional world of Tale Town, home of Little Red, Jack (of the beanstalk fame), Princess Rapunzel, and Anansi (the spider of west African legend). The first book, The Spell Thief, is about Anansi’s arrival in Tale Town. Jack sees Anansi talking to a troll in the woods and decides that the spider must be a troll spy.
The books will be published in paperback and e-book formats by Macmillan Children’s Books and as an illustrated digital book on Made in Me’s Me Books platform. The Spell Thief and the second book, The Great Troll Rescue, will be published in both formats in February 2016, with books three and four to follow at a later date.
The books will be written and illustrated by Tom Percival, who is represented by Elinor Cooper at Rochelle Stevens.
“It’s been a massive amount of fun breathing new life into these timeless characters and imagining how they would all play together in the magicalworld we’ve created for them,” said Percival. “I hope that young readers will enjoy the adventures of Red, Jack, Anansi and their friends as much as I’ve enjoyed writing and illustrating them.”
The deal means that Me Book titles will become physical books for the first time in the company’s history.
“From a Made in Me perspective, this is exciting because it's our first digital Me Book brand to become a physical book - and with such a great partner in Pan Mac, as well,” said development director Eric Huang.
He added: “We always saw Me Books as not just a digital bookshop but also a place where new stories and new brands can launch to a dedicated family audience from digital books to physical books, TV and toys – and beyond.”
