Maverick sells US rights to Hedgehugs

Maverick Arts Publishing has sold the North American rights to two books in the Hedgehugs series to Macmillan.

The first book Hedgehugs will be published later this month in the US and Canada by Henry Holt Company, an imprint of Macmillan US. Macmillan has also bought the rights to Horace and Hattiepillar, the second book in the series, although publication date is to be confirmed.

The Hedgehugs series, by husband and wife team Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper, is about Horace and Hattie, two hedgehogs who are best friends. Hedgehugs was shortlisted for the Evening Standard’s Oscar’s First Book Prize in May and the third book in the series, Hopping Hot, will be released in the UK in January (p/b, £6.99).

Maverick has also created two board books about the characters and a line of calendar products for UK supermarkets.

Steve Bicknell, m.d. of Maverick, said the brand will flourish in North America because “the illustrations are universally appealing and the story is very touching”.
