Orion is to publish three new titles by US author Diana Gabaldon, with her turning her attentions to crime for the first time.
Deputy publishing director Bill Massey acquired world rights excluding US and Canada from Danny Baror at Baror International.
The first title, Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner will be published in August 2011. It is the third novel in Gabaldon's Lord John series, a spin-off of her "historical sci-fi adventure-romance" Outlander series, which has sold 18m copies worldwide, according to the publisher.
The second title will be a contemporary crime novel, provisionally titled Red Ant's Head, lined up for 2012, with a further crime novel to follow.
Massey said: "Following the bestselling success of her seventh Outlander novel, An Echo in the Bone, we are thrilled to be publishing not only the next novel in Diana's brilliant Lord John series, but also her long-anticipated first contemporary suspense novel.
"This is going to be a major publishing event and is set to bring her storytelling genius to a whole new audience."
Orion published An Echo in the Bone in January 2010. Previously, Gabaldon was published by Random House imprint Arrow.
