Agent Ben Mason has secured two deals, one for a thriller set in the milieu of Bleak House and The Woman in White and the other a memoir of a woman once married to a serial killer.
Corsair editorial director of crime fiction Krystyna Green bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Mason to Lynn Shepherd's Tom All Alone and another novel. The book is about Victorian detective Charles Maddox who becomes entangled in an investigation that runs parallel to the crimes in Charles Dickens' Bleak House and Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White.
Kate Miciak at Ballentine Bantam Dell bought North American rights and the book will be published in spring/summer 2012. Green said: "[Shepherd's] novel is utterly absorbing and enthralling in complexity and style, and we are thrilled to add Lynn to the Corsair list."
Meanwhile, Ingrid Connell, editorial director for non-fiction at Pan Macmillan, bought UK and British Commonwealth rights to Escape from Evil by Cathy Wilson through Mason. Wilson married Peter Tobin, who is serving three life sentences for the murder of three women, when she was 17. Mason said the book will describe "her marriage, and how the past continued to haunt her until she stood in court as a witness against the man who could so easily have murdered her too". A release date is to be confirmed.
