Mantle has pre-empted a debut novel by Sharon Guskin.
Associate publisher Sam Humphreys bought UK and Commonwealth rights to The Forgetting Time from Kerry Nordling for Flatiron Books. Amy Einhorn will publish for Flatiron in the US and Canada.
Humphreys said: “This debut novel tells the story of a little boy called Noah, who just wants to go home. The only trouble is, he’s already home… I read it in one sitting; it really is one of those novels you just devour, and I had the same feeling reading it as I did The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. The response in-house has been overwhelming, and I’m hugely excited about this acquisition. It’s also great to share a book with Amy again – the last book we worked on together was The Husband’s Secret – and to be part of a global publishing deal.”
Anna Bond, Pan Macmillan UK sales director, said: “It's amazing to have this key acquisition for Mantle from Sam and for it to be such a show stopper. As the editor who acquired Room by Emma Donoghue we have been waiting with baited breath to see what she would bring to the list and The Forgetting Time is exactly what we were hoping for. It has the perfect mix of pace and heart wrapped up in the mystery of Noah.”
The Forgetting Time has also sold in France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Israel and Brazil, with offers on the table in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Mantle will publish in early 2016.
