Mantel and Woodward on Sunday Times short story shortlist

Man Booker winner Hilary Mantel and Man Booker nominated author Gerard Woodward have been shortlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award.

Six authors are in contention for the £30,000 prize, which is open to authors of previously unpublished work or stories first published after 1st January 2010. The judges said the stories "include tales of lost innocence, relationships and childhood adventures, as well as the experience of immigrants in London, a German soldier returning home after World War II, and a young man struggling to support himself".

The panel comprises author and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, journalist and author Daisy Waugh, writer and journalist Will Self, Booker Prize-winning novelist and poet A S Byatt, and Andrew Holgate, literary editor of the Sunday Times. The non-voting chair of judges is Matthew Evans, chairman of EFG Private Bank and former chairman of Faber & Faber.

The winner will be announced at the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival on 8th April. The prize is managed by Booktrust.
