The former owner of Maher the Bookseller, which went out of business in June after 16 years trading, has opened another bookshop selling titles for up to 50% off r.r.p.
Tony Maher, who used to own his former business in the Howard Centre of Welwyn Garden City, recently opened The Bookshop in the shopping complex in the centre of Welwyn Garden City with his business partner Jon Barlow.
The new shop is half the size of his former at 2,000 square feet. Maher plans to sell 20,000 titles and offer customers a range of 500,000 titles to order from inside the shop. The strap line for the business is "bringing internet prices to the high street".
Maher said: "We are discounting everything on the front list by up to 50%, and how much support we get from publishers is determining how much we discount the book. Some have definitely been better than others. We are trying to tweak the model of the independent bookshop into a successful concept that might work on the high street, to respond to Amazon and the supermarkets."
