Entertainment company Magic Light Pictures has launched an app based on Julia Donaldson’s bestselling picture book The Gruffalo.
"Gruffalo: Games", developed with Stormcloud Games, is not a story app but a collection of six puzzle games, including "3 in a row", "Snap" and various jigsaws.
Magic Light co-founder Martin Pope said the app will complement the book, first published by Macmillan Children’s Books 15 years ago and now firmly established as one of the UK’s most popular picture books.
“We want the many fans of the book to enjoy the fun, challenging games as much as we do,” he said. “We want players to get involved in the world of The Gruffalo, helping Mouse to catch nuts or playing games against the Gruffalo himself. It's such a pleasure to be working with Julia's wonderful rhymes and Axel's amazing illustrations.
The app was designed as a safe digital space for children as there are no in-app purchase offers or third-party ads, he added.
"The Gruffalo: Games" is based on Axel Scheffler’s original illustrations and comes with music compared by René Aubry. It costs £2.99 and is available for Apple products via the App store.
Magic Light owns the branding, audio-visual and merchandising rights for the Gruffalo and is responsible for the 2009 film, broadcast on BBC One. It has also adapted The Gruffalo’s Child and Room on a Broom for television.
