David Smith said: &quot; The company will make every effort to mitigate the effects of the decision including redeploying people wherever possible. However, it is inevitable that there will be compulsory redundancies for many employees in the Basingstoke warehouse.&quot;</div><div><br /></div><div>The warehouse&#39;s contracts with Pan Macmillan and Quadrille will be transfered to MDL&#39;s Swansea warehouse, with the stock moving to the Swansea warehouse beginning in the first quarter of next year.</div><div><br /></div><div>The company has been in consultation with trade union Unite over the past three months, aiming to avoid the Basingstoke closure. However, according to the statement, &quot;no viable alternative to the proposal has been found&quot;.</div><div><br /></div><div>Smith added consultation with Unite will continue in order to agree compensation terms for any compulsory redundancies. He could not yet confirm any precise date for any redundancies, since it would rely partly on the logistics of the transfer of stock. According to the Basingstoke Gazette, 35 jobs are at risk.</div><div><br /></div><div>Smith did not rule out a complete move away from the area in the future. He stressed the company is &quot;committed to retaining a strong presence in Basingstoke, although it is possible that relocation to other premises in the area may be considered at some stage in the future.&quot; He added: &quot; No further redundancies are anticipated as a result of this decision amongst other employees in the Basingstoke offices other than those directly involved in warehouse operations.&quot;</div><div><br /></div><div>Macmillan Distribution handles over 40 publishers.</div>
