Macmillan Children's buys Birthright trilogy

Macmillan Children's Books has acquired a new trilogy called Birthright by Elsewhere author Gabrielle Zevin, who was previously published by Bloomsbury.

UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, were bought in the books from Douglas Stewart at Sterling Lord Literistic agency in the US, in a deal brokered by the UK sub-agent, Shirley Stewart of the Shirley Stewart Literary Agency.

The first part of the trilogy, All These Things I've Done, will be published in April 2012, and is set in a crime- and poverty-ridden New York in 2082. Chocolate and coffee are illegal, and other basic commodities such as paper and water are rationed. Anya Balantine is the daughter of the city's late, most notorious, crime boss, and is arrested when her violent ex-boyfriend is poisoned.

Macmillan Children's Books publicity manager Lauren Ace said: "I was a children's bookseller when Elsewhere was published and it was the book I recommended more than any other. I will certainly be bringing the same enthusiasm to promoting All These Things I've Done.

"I couldn't get my hands on a copy of the manuscript quickly enough and, for me, there is something intangible about Zevin's writing which sets her apart."
