The first ever Lonely Planet shop is to open at Sydney Airport early next month. The new Lonely Planet concept store will open as a part of the airport's $500 million redevelopment. The shop will sell a full range of the travel publishers digital products and travel guides. Lonely Planet has teamed up with Lagardère Services Asia Pacific, a travel retailer with more than 150 stores.
"Airports are strange places," said Howard Ralley, sales and marketing director for Lonely Planet. "You're half-excited and half-bored. Everyon waiting for a flight wants to be inspired or have their attention diverted, so we figured where better to open the world's first Lonely Planet store showcasing all that we do, from digital services to guidebook content? As well as over 500 books, videos and quality travel gear, there'll be i-touch screens to deliver expert information from our authors, plus the ability to print your own custom guidebook from our Pick & Mix chapters."
The interior has been designed by an Australian design company, Studio Red. The designers have created a montage of book covers which appear to spring from the wall.
