The London Book Fair is bringing out a programme of a dozen awards for the international book trade, which will début at LBF next April.
The inaugural LBF International Book Industry Excellence Awards—launched along with the UK Publishers Association—will include the PA Award for International Copyright Protection; the British Council International New Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award; and the LBF, PA and British Council Award for Market Focus Innovation.
London Book Fair will also continue to give out its Lifetime Achievement Award, which it has presented since 2005.
LBF director Jacks Thomas said the prizes will fill a gap in the international publishing award schedules by providing a “truly global view of the book world and provide an opportunity for the UK publishing industry to recognise, and celebrate, the excellent achievements of their international book industry colleagues.”
The awards—which will span trade, academic, supply chain, education, children’s and digital innovation—will take place on 8th April, 2014, the first evening of next year’s LBF. The judging panel, call for submisson and criteria will be released later this month.
Shortlists will be announced in February.
Richard Mollet, Publishers Association c.e.o., said these awards were “long overdue”. He added: “Overseas markets continue to play a key role for UK publishers, with 41% of revenue coming from exports. There are numerous innovative companies and talented individuals who contribute to the continued success of British publishing internationally and we look forward to applauding their achievements.”
