Little, Brown has acquired a book in a “hotly-contested five-way auction” by former England cricket captain Mike Brearley about being “in the zone”.
Andreas Campomar bought UK and Commonwealth rights to On Form from Matthew Hamilton at Aitken Alexander Associates.
Brearley’s book “looks at a range of states of mind, conjoined with action, from the courage to face dangerous or difficult challenges to an almost transcendental state for which words like ‘inspired’ or ‘spiritual’ come to mind”. Brearley suggests that though we can’t guarantee form or creativity, in any area, we can have some understanding of how we might make it more likely.
Brearley, who is also a psychoanalyst, captained the England cricket team during the 1981 Ashes series.
Campomar said: “When I read Mike’s proposal I thought it exceptional. Mike is the great all-rounder, in sporting and academic terms, of our time, and is uniquely equipped to write on that most magical of states – the ‘purple patch’. It will be a big book intellectually; one that has all the makings of a classic.”
Brearley previously wrote The Art of Captaincy, first published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1985.
Little, Brown will publish On Form in 2016.
