Little, Brown to publish Ted Kennedy biog

Little, Brown is to publish the autobiography of US senator Ted Kennedy, who died last night aged 77, after a year-long battle with a brain tumour. True Compass: A Memoir, which was five years in the writing, is due out on 14th September as a £20 hardback. The publication date was brought forward from the 5th October.

The book, co-written by journalist, author and biographer Ron Powers, tells his "extraordinary personal story", Little, Brown said. It will include stories about his family, politics and "50 years at the centre of national events". The younger brother of John and Bobby, both of whom were assassinated, Ted Kennedy was a widely respected Democrat senator, described by some as a "liberal lion". His political life began when he played a key role in the presidential campaign of his brother John F Kennedy before going on to join the Senate, where he worked for 46 years.

Although he failed in his one attempt to become president, losing the candidature to Jimmy Carter in 1980, Kennedy was thought of as one of the greatest "executive legislators" in recent years. Notably, he was a key member of the movement for healthcare reform in the US, which is now being heatedly debated across the country.

As with so many others in the Kennedy clan, he experienced some controversies in his personal life, which the publisher said he addressed "with unprecedented candour".
