Little, Brown picks up 'extraordinary' memoir of love and loss by Lucas

Little, Brown has acquired If Not for You, a "life-affirming" memoir from Georgina Lucas.

The synopsis reads: "On 17th November 2019, Grey Atticus Fox was born, nine weeks early, to Georgie and Mike in a Kent hospital. Heart wrenching, cathartic, life-affirming, this is her account of the 21 days they had together, and its aftermath — the search to make sense of unimaginable loss. It bears witness to both the confusion and the clarity that accompany great pain, and stands as a testament to empathy, care and humanity when life is at its hardest."

Richard Beswick, publisher, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Georgina Lucas from Alice Saunders at the Soho Agency. If Not for You will be published in late January 2022.

Beswick commented: "Since we have become better at talking about the tragedy of death and dying, we have seen a number of wonderful memoirs on the subject. But Georgina Lucas’ account of the short life of her 21-day-old son, Grey, is different: because it is not so much about loss (though it is about that  too) as love. I don’t think I have ever read a book which captures the essence of love so wonderfully. It is extraordinary and inspiring — and I believe is a book which readers will be recommending to each other for a very long time to come."
