Literary debut for Myriad Editions

Myriad Editions has signed a debut novel, discovered during the publisher's annual Writer's Retreat competition.

Sara Marshall-Ball's Hush follows a woman who suffers from selective mutism, and chooses to let her partner speak for her. When she returns to her childhood home, she unearths secrets that lie at the heart of her condition.

Fiction editor Vicky Blunden signed world rights direct from the author, who wrote the book wile an MA student in creative and critical writing at the University of Sussex.

The Writer's Retreat competition, run in partnership with West Dean College, allows writers with work in progress to submit work for scrutiny from industry professionals.

Blunden said: "Hush is an excellent example of the kind of carefully structured, finely wrought literary fiction that can come out of the best creative writing courses."

Myriad will publish Hush in autumn 2015.
