Likely spring date for Tesco's Blinkbox Books

Tesco’s e-book platform Blinkbox Books will not get its public launch until March 2014 at the earliest, The Bookseller understands.

The online platform is currently being tested in beta form by Tesco staff who have been given the supermarket’s own-brand Hudl tablet.

While Blinkbox Books would not confirm exact timings, a Tesco spokesperson said: “I can confirm that we are carrying out an extensive testing phase to ensure that the service lives up to customer expectations when launched in the coming months.”

The delayed launch means the service will miss the Christmas launch date the trade was expecting.

Former Facebook head of retail Gavin Sathianathan was appointed as Blinkbox Books m.d. in March this year. In August, it was announced that Garry Blackman, formerly books buying manager at Tesco, would lead on supplier relations for BlinkBox Books.

Tesco bought the e-book platform as Mobcast for £4.5m in September 2012.

The other BlinkBox platforms, Blinkbox Movies and TV, launched in September when the Tesco Hudl tablet was released.
