Ebury Press has bagged a “timely and revealing” memoir by Allie Morgan, a librarian who regularly lifts the lid on secrets from behind the counter.
Publishing director Sara Cywinski acquired world all languages rights to The Librarian direct from the author, for release on 4th February 2021.
Morgan has worked in various libraries across the UK, and was behind the viral Twitter thread "28 Things I Learned about the General Public While Working at the Library". The Librarian is her first book.
The book's synopsis explains: “In her insider account, she shares her own journey – of hitting rock bottom and being on the verge of taking her own life, when she receives a call from her local library offering her a job, which in turn saves her life – to stories of day-to-day encounters that brilliantly shine a light on the true value of community hubs. And in doing so Allie provides a stark warning to us all: the threat of closure is just around the corner, unless we act now, before it’s too late.”
Cywinski said: “For someone who works with books day in day out, it’s been a joy to work alongside Allie. Sometimes we are lucky enough to work on something that affects us on all levels, and this project has really resonated with us. In The Librarian Allie has managed to shine a light on some hard-hitting community issues, as well as being a passionate advocate for libraries, whilst also being wryly entertaining and incredibly observant. Ebury is thrilled to be publishing this extraordinary, timely book.”
Morgan added: “I'm incredibly honoured to have had this chance to spread the word about all of the good public libraries do and why they're so important, especially in these difficult times. The hugely positive response to my observations about working in a library has been a wonderful surprise. Hearing from library users and staff all over the world has cemented my view that we simply cannot afford to lose this precious resource! I'm immensely grateful to Sara and everyone at Ebury for allowing me to share my story and for making the writing and publishing process so accessible and enjoyable. I hope that everyone who loves the magic of libraries will see a little bit of themselves in this book.”
