<p>I agree with everything Jonathan Spencer-Payne wrote (Letters, 1st December) and would like to add a couple of comments. Under pressure from Amazon, the supermarkets and other non-traditional bookselling outlets, publishers have developed a new business model to cope with their demands: an artificially high cover price offset by high and negotiable rates of discount. For the independent sector, publishers maintain the old Net Book Agreement business model of fixed discounts, the only change following the demise of the NBA being a relatively small amount of flexibility in the discount.
