Exhibitors and table holders at last week's volcano-hit London Book Fair will get a 30% discount at next year's event, LBF exhibition director Alistair Burtenshaw has said. Meanwhile international visitors who were unable to attend this year will get free entry at 2011's fair.
In a letter sent to all exhibitors today (27th April), Burtenshaw said it was "heartbreaking to deliver such a comprehensive show and content programme only for the airlines not to be able to deliver many of our international participants." The discount offer, described as a "thank you" package, was made in recognition of this year's disruption and to mark the fair's 40th birthday in 2011, Burtenshaw added. LBF said the early booking rate would be 1.5% increase on 2010 rates.

Burtenshaw wrote to exhibitors on the final day of the event saying it would assess "a number of options in recognition of the knock-on effect of reduced attendance". It now estimates that total attendance numbers were down by around 32% thanks to the flight disruption caused by the volcanic ash.
The LBF was widely praised for it handling of the crisis last week, though at the end of the event (and after the LBF's letter) a petition signed by over 100 publishers was presented to Burtenshaw requesting "a fair and just compensation for our losses" because of the poor international attendance at the event. The petition asked the fair for either an immediate refund of a minimum of 30% of stand rental costs, or the same amount discounted for the 2011 event.
